Whim Declassified: The Holiday Movie Marathon Survival Guide

Aspyn Saunder

Holiday marathons are among the easiest and most enjoyable events to plan. Whether you curl up alone with your favorite blanket, with a couple of friends, or with a special someone, the right movie lineup is key. It can turn an ordinary night into something truly full of festive magic. Choosing the right lineup can be difficult, though. When doing a movie marathon, you want to keep the attention and spirits high. Here’s how to build a holiday movie marathon lineup that makes the event cozy, fun-filled, and tailored to any situation.

Choose a Theme to Set the Mood

A great marathon starts by picking a set direction. Instead of just picking random movies, consider curating your lineup based on a theme.

Classic ChristmasWhite Christmas, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Animated and MagicalPolar Express, A Christmas Carol, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph

Rom-Com: Finding Love In The HolidaysJingle Bell Heist, A Merry Little EX-MAS, Hope At Christmas

Comedic Chaos ELF, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone

Plan When to Show What Movies

After you pick your theme, it is important to keep the flow of the night in mind. When first starting, you might want to start with a high-energy movie. Everyone will be excited when they first show up. Then, by it’s time for the next movie, everyone is settled in. This is the perfect time for a more slow-paced emotional movie. Lastly, you can end the night with a cozy heart warming, easy to fall asleep to movie.

Creating the Right Environment

Part of the magic isn’t just the movies themselves but also the atmosphere you create.

Lighting: Soft lighting allows for more focus on the TV and allows for a nice, calm environment. Maybe throw up a few string lights or light your favorite holiday-scented candle.

Blanket and Pillows: There is no better environment than one where you feel like you are cuddled up to a cloud. Find your softest, furriest bedding set.

Pajamas Encouraged: To allow for maximum comfort, PJs should definitely be encouraged. Even better if they are matching to add fun (and cute photos)!

Of Course, Snacks

You can’t have a Christmas marathon without a plethora of snacks. Sweet, salty, or even holiday themed.

Sweet: Hot cocoa bar, candy canes, cookies, popcorn with chocolate topping

Savory: Chips, pretzels, nachos

Holiday Themes: Gingerbread (maybe even have a decorating contest), peppermint anything, reindeer rice krispie treats

By the end of the night, a movie marathon can turn into more than a few hours in front of the TV. It can be a chance to create long-lasting memories. A night filled with laughter, warmth, and cheer. The shared moments of sneaking bites of holiday treats, quoting favorite lines, or cozying up under warm blankets can turn simple movies into a meaningful experience. Planning these events reminds us that the holidays aren’t just about the cheerful season, but about the wonderful people we share them with.
