Makeup can be more than just a color pigment on the skin. It can be a language in its own right. In recent years, makeup has pushed the boundaries of expression. Makeup can be used to transform your face into a canvas. Like any other canvas, your face can be your space for storytelling, identity exploration, and pure artistic play. The vibrant colors mirror shifting moods to an amazing exploration in challenging traditional beauty norms. Makeup invites anyone, no matter the skill, to shape their emotions and experiences into something unique. In a world that comforts conformity, expression makeup offers a space to create without boundaries.
My Journey
I didn’t always have a love for makeup. I actually started out hating it and wanting nothing to do with it. I fell victim to the unfair bias that makeup was used to cover up something. Makeup meant you were insecure about what was underneath. Now I see that whether that’s the case or not, it’s a way to express yourself. However, whether you choose to put it into play is entirely up to you.
It wasn’t until high school that I really started experimenting with makeup. I found joy in using vibrant colors on my eyes to enhance my outfits. I never allowed myself to be simple with it either. I was always blending colors; I never used just one. Growing up, I was very artsy. Crocheting one week, painting the next, crostitching the week after that. I found that makeup was just another way to express myself. It started with just eyeshadow and some eyeliner. Now I have way too many face paint pallets and even more makeup ones. Each new face I conjure up is a piece of my soul spilling out on my face.
My first ever go at something more than just eyeshadow was in 2022. I started experimenting with more than eyeshadow and moved on to face paint.

The same year, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and do something a bit more challenging. I will admit I almost gave up on this look. I became very frustrated and was ready to give up. Trying to paint butterfly wings that match is extremely difficult on a rounded face. However, I prevailed and ended up very satisfied with myself.

Later on in my makeup experience, I decided to expand across my whole face. This resulted in some of my favorite looks. My journey with makeup continues to this day. I draw my inspiration from everything around me. Mostly, I focus on seasons, but sometimes I write about whatever pops into my mind. As I continue to experiment, I am constantly reminded that makeup isn’t just something I wear, but something I create. It changes and grows with me, and gives me a way to express myself in ways I won’t always be able to put into words. That is what keeps me picking up the brushes. I pursue it for the experience, the challenge, and the expression, but most importantly, I do it because it’s something I truly enjoy.
