New River, New Me

New River, New Me

John Ratliff II

While it may be late September, the weather would make you think we’re still on our summer break. The temperature has been incredibly bipolar recently with chilly mornings and scorching afternoons. It has been a great time to get outside and spend time in the sun after classes are let out and homework assignments are completed. One place that I have found to be an incredible hangout spot would be by the New River, just off Radford University’s campus!

While students and staff may not have all visited this river before, it can be hard to miss it. Whether you have crossed the bridge to park your car as a student or drove to get some food or groceries close by off campus, you have probably looked down from a bridge and viewed this river. I was interested in this river and decided to go by it and check it out for myself, and since then, it has become my personal favorite spot to relax and simply enjoy nature.

Activities

If your dating app bio says you love long walks by the beach, then you may be quite interested in stopping by the New River. Along the side of the New River, there is a trail that can be used for walking, dog walking, biking, or any form of physical movement activities. Whether you’re looking to get in some cardio, letting your dogs out of the house, or just simply being at peace alone in nature, I find walking by the New River to be quite therapeutic to the mind and healthy to the body. I don’t just speak for myself and students. I’ve seen entire families riding their bikes along the river, laughing, older couples going for a walk with their family of dogs, and groups of runners tracking their pace and practicing for PRs.

Maybe walking isn’t your style, and you would like something more engaging. You can always find things to do IN the river! I would recommend that you can safely enter and exit the river before you get too deep, but I have witnessed many cool things in the water. Swimming, I would say, is the first idea that comes to mind with a large source of water. Most people can swim, and there is even a tiny island out in the river that I’ve seen people swim to and back from. Fishing has been a hobby of many people for a long time, and this river is a perfect place to try and reel in something big. I don’t know how many people own one, but I’ve seen that it’s a great place to bring your boat out to. Anything you can legally imagine doing in, on, or by the water is open to the public for their entertainment.

These are just some basic activities that I have both seen and participated in, but you can truly do whatever you’d like to feel happy here. Some personal recommendations I can leave would be to listen to music, try and learn a song on that instrument you bought 4 years ago, read a book, go on a picnic, plan a romantic date with your partner, watch the sunset, watch a soccer game in the field close by, write or draw, watch the geese, run away from the geese, scream, enjoy the scenery, check out the bottom of the bridge, anything you could think of to just enjoy the outdoors and nature. The New River in Radford, Virginia, is a perfect place to take a break from the pressure and stress of the busy day and unwind in any way that fits you.
