I can always tell when the semester is getting truly bad for my mental health if I start to watch any Lego Ninjago episode.
When I first started going to college, I needed background noise to get through my homework, so I would put on a show or movie, I found some great ones (Travelers, magicians, the Scream film series), some not so great but still captivating ones (the Korean remake of A Love So Beautiful, Transformers film series, H20 mako mermaids) and horrible/call for help (lego ninjago).
And the one thing these shows provided were escapism.
I would like to clarify now that I am complaining about the television show that has three sections and roughly 16 seasons on Netflix, not the 2020 movie version, that movie was fun, I own it.
In the past, right when the middle of the semester hit and I was overwhelmed to the point of tears. I’d put on any episode of Lego Ninjago to focus and have sadly made it through 13 of those seasons. If I start talking about Lloyd Garmadon to my family and friends, they ask if I’m doing okay.
But with how my current semester has been going, there hasn’t been any time to watch anything other than the assigned films for class (more complaints about my film minor) that hasn’t stopped me from trying though.
Something I’ve been watching slowly recently has been a show I used to enjoy growing up. Which is Haven (2010.) A supernatural drama loosely based on a Stephen King novel The Colorado Kid. I’ve never read that novel and I also didn’t make it past season 3 my first time watching. But now I’m at the start of season 2 and it’s just as I remembered it: dramatic and a little silly.
The plot follows FBI agent Audrey Parker as she investigates a case in Haven, Maine. The cases gets weirder as paranormal circumstances are intertwined with their journey. And Parker, who is an orphan by the way, finds out her mom was from this town and stays to learn more.
I’m excited to see where this goes and if I’ll remember any of the plot points from my first watch. But for now, I’m sticking to spoilers, and whatever it takes to avoid Lego Ninjago. One more month to go. I think I can manage.
