Pappus

Pappus

Bria Davis

Written by Lauren

I can still see you—

among the breaks of blue in the clouds.

Your smile like a pappus in the wind,

under the grooves of your favorite Dogwood.

Our long bodies placed like Lincoln logs

trading secrets of the past.

Your laughter drifts through my hair.

Sweaty footprints marking the end of dance parties.

Dreams hidden in that old wicker basket of hair ribbons.

Promises like Marigolds twisted around pinkies.

Your eyes peeled back the layers of my fortress

carefully soothing every ache.

Gentle hands cradled an oozing heart.

Hysterics invigorated the embers of my soul.

Espresso stained letters paint the corners of your smile.

Your cadence is my favorite melody.

I can’t decide who was saved first—

but the imprint of your hand is etched into my heart.

My heart is twisted into a bow.

These lyrics are all I can give to you.
