Oh, Helene

Oh, Helene

Bria Davis

Written by Hailey

Waking up to the bright rays on my face,

A day seemingly usual with intentions hidden beneath,

Opening the windowpanes with a feeling of loss,

My heart stings with grief and sorrow,

Trees and trash are scattered throughout,

Why Helene, oh Helene, why?

Closing the window to hide the sight,

A tear, a shout, a cry from all out.

High above ground as the sun begins to rise,

Roads of rivers flowing to lakes,

The Atlantic pacing its way inland,

My roofs afloat mourning my car,

The winds pick up, keeping me hushed,

Why Helene, oh Helene, why?

The livelihood of mine and others drift away,

A tear, a shout, a cry from all out.

A place of flood but completely in drought,

No food or water brought for some,

Oh how can we be so unprepared,

For the hands of Helene causing so much harm?

Why Helene, oh Helene, why?

A community motivated together,

Bringing hope to the land filled with loss,

A tear, a shout, a cry from all out.
